Our Mission
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people
everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people
in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent
houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's
love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Habitat for Humanity's goal is to eliminate substandard and poverty
housing by building adequate housing with those who need it. Habitat
for Humanity seeks to instill this goal in the hearts and minds of
people in such a way that substandard housing becomes socially,
politically and religiously unacceptable everywhere in the world.
Habitat for Humanity urges its supporters to educate themselves on the
issue of poverty housing and homelessness, both in their own
communities and around the world, to volunteer, and to share its
mission and vision with others. Every day, as more people are enlisted
in Habitat's effort, the houses they build demonstrate in a concrete
and positive way that substandard housing can be eliminated from the
world. Habitat for Humanity encourages you to log on to www.habitat.org
to learn more about its worldwide efforts, access the online version of
the bi-monthly magazine, Habitat World, and find out how to get
involved in assisting us in eliminating substandard housing.
We offer a hand up, not a hand out. How we build is as important as
what we build. By investing themselves in the building process, future
homeowners gain self-reliance, self-esteem and new skills. We require
our Habitat homeowners to invest hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" to
help build their home. With a qualified 0% interest mortgage, the
homeowners' down payment and monthly payments are used to build more
houses by means of a revolving fund.
You can help make this vision a reality. Habitat for Humanity of Lake
City/Columbia County seeks to provide families in our community with
decent and affordable homes. This process is only possible through the
contributions of habitat volunteers. Through volunteering you can take
an active role in building a strong community, forming new friendships,
gaining responsibilies and learning new skills. All of these valuable
attributes are accessible while working hand in hand with the future
homeowners themselves. There are many areas for you to contribute your
talents. To donate your time and talents to Habitat for Humanity, please visit our "Ways to Volunteer" page. For
information on how you can support Habitat's work through donations (of
land, construction materials and funds), please visit our "Ways to Donate"
page.
"With Habitat we build more than just houses. We build families, community, and hope." -President Jimmy Carter
